We can do this by either double clicking LobsterWorld, or by right clicking it and selecting open editor. Lets look at the default code that s been added. Compiling a Java program means taking the programmer-readable text in your program file (also called source code) and converting it to bytecodes, which are platform-independent instructions for the Java VM. This means that it hasn t been compiled yet. You should now notice you have created a child class of World called LobsterWorld Notice that LobsterWorld is greyed out. Wombats like to eat leaves, so add a couple of leaf objects in their path and they should eat them. If you have done this correctly you should see a wombat running around the edge. This terminology wont make a lot of sense yet, but we will revisit it again. What you have done here is to add an instance (object) of the class Wombat. We can click on the actor (wombat in this case), then hold down shift, or right click the actor and select new Wombat(). There are two ways of doings this manually. Nothing will happen, so don t be surprised as we haven t actually told it to do anything! Lets add our first actor to our world. Click the run button in the Controls area. TypeScript allows you to define complex type definitions in the form of interfaces. Static language variables are type-checked. Programming languages can either be statically- or dynamically-typed – the difference is when type checking occurs. The key to TypeScript is that it’s a statically-typed script. This is great because it reduces the likelihood of calling the wrong function or accidentally skipping a variable declaration. TypeScript also does compilation time checks that help flag errors such as wrong parameter assignments, syntax errors, and so much more. This overall reduces the possibility of assigning the wrong types to our variables. TypeScript offers variable checks by checking the data type assigned to statically-defined variables. Below are just a few benefits of using TypeScript in React: Variable and bug checks TypeScript can be helpful to React developers in many ways. Even pure JavaScript applications ship a type.d.ts type definition for TypeScript developers. TypeScript emits JavaScript when compiled and is a popular name in the JavaScript world today. TypeScript was born to bridge this gap and to become an alternative for enterprise-level development. JavaScript can quickly become complex and sometimes can’t live up to the full potential of an object-oriented programming language. JavaScript was initially created as a client-side language, but over time, developers understood that JavaScript could be used on the server, especially with the invention of the v8 engine. It is a strict superset of JavaScript that adds optional static typing and class-based, object-oriented programming to the language. TypeScript is a free, open source programming language developed and maintained by Microsoft. React is minimal in its footprint but can be customized for almost any project.įor more about React at a high level, check out the official React documentation. React is easily extendable and can include features such as routing and state management patterns with libraries like Redux.

Your environment is a big predictor of your success. For example, "Spend one hour a day going through Wes Bos' JavaScript course" is a much easier task to complete.Īnalyzing your ambitious goal and placing it into a structure of small tasks and reasonable deadlines will make it much easier to keep on moving forward. Are they small enough? Have you structured your project appropriately? If your next task reads something like "Learn JavaScript", you need to make your tasks smaller. You might think you're perfectly capable of achieving your goal, but still end up procrastinating on your tasks. This can be a subtle one, because you needn't necessarily feel overwhelmed to be overwhelmed. Often, this is because the goal overwhelms you. But you can't get yourself to do any of your tasks. You've set an ambitious goal that requires you to push hard every day. It's anecdotal evidence, but it keeps me going. A study from Michigan State University has shown that Nobel Prize Winners are 2.85 more likely than the average scientist to have an artistic or crafty hobby. For example, your why for an otherwise boring project at work can be "So my manager sees I can get down in the weeds and get stuff done."Īnother example: I'm currently learning how to play the piano, because I believe that learning a new instrument will improve my creativity. Your why needn't even be directly associated with a particular project either. Just write down some of the reasons why you're doing what you're doing and don't stop until you arrive at something that stirs you, something that has you nodding your head. This needn't be some ethereal process where you look up at the sky for the answer to echo in your head. This is frequently a big reason why you might have lost motivation for something.Īsk yourself, why did you start a particular project? Why do you work at your current job? If your answers are weak and might as well be accompanied with a shrug or an "I guess", then your why isn't strong enough. Often, however, that answer isn't strong or emotional enough. Most people have some answer as to why they're doing what they're doing. "I've never been great at anything." => "I'm good at many things already and can become great in them too."."I don't deserve success." => "I will take what comes my way and use it for good."."I can't do this." => "I can do this, I just need to figure out how.".Here are some bad thoughts you should replace: Identify your limiting beliefs first (write them down to make this process easier) and exchange them for empowering beliefs.įor example: it's not because you've achieved little so far that you aren't capable of achieving much in the future. Solution: Be careful with your self-talk. Is your self-talk negative? Are you often cynical or bitter? Do you consider yourself unworthy of something? If so, this could be the reason why you're feeling unmotivated. In his book 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth, John Maxwell calls the value judgments that people make about themselves "the most important factor in someone's psychological development and motivation." If you're feeling unmotivated, a few of the below reasons will usually pop out to you as the reasons why you specifically have lost motivation (for a particular project or in general). There are many reasons why someone can experience a sudden loss of motivation, but the reasons are quite specific and it's not all that hard to figure out which one you're suffering from. Properly analyzing why you're not feeling motivated will make it easier to snap out of it and will ultimately determine how productive and fulfilled you can feel over a prolonged period of time. It's your subconscious mind giving hints that something is off. You see, losing motivation is instructional. Usually, we simply force ourselves through the days until we start feeling better. This loss of motivation hits everyone in life, from the tired med school student to the highly effective executive. We feel guilty about it too, but we can't get ourselves to do anything about it. We procrastinate on our tasks and our projects. Getting out of bed is a struggle and few things excite. A sudden, seemingly inexplicable loss of motivation. It was a fever dream of a hot day in July 1946 when he started, and then he finished in February two years later. “Sleigh Ride” was conceived by Leroy Anderson just after he left the army. It feels like a sleigh ride, with the flourishes of strings standing in for flourishes of snow. It’s decidedly not a pop song it’s a light classical song with movements like episodes, and by the time those rising horns are introduced in the latter act, it’s like a marching band striding merrily straight into your heart, filling it with holiday cheer. Leroy Anderson’s version of his own song is, fittingly, the best version of it. The New Christy Minstrels, Merry Christmas! (1966) Adam Counts of Trap City sets Ella’s vocals to a stutter beat before stretching the limits of how much you want to hear her repeat “giddy-up!” Truly something for everyone.īut in case you don’t want to induce yourself into Christmas madness and instead just want to hear the best of the best, here are the top ten versions of “Sleigh Ride” that best encapsulate the spirit and feel of this perfect, surprisingly pliable holiday music masterpiece.ġ0. Barenaked Ladies make fun of the whole song and still come off charming. TLC start singing it and then more or less forget it in favor of some Christmas rapping. There will be stellar highs - like Glenn Miller Orchestra’s triumphant version, and disappointing lows - like She & Him’s, which sounds so sleepy you’ll wonder if Zooey had an Ambien just before having their horse set off. I also feel comfortable recommending just listening to the entire playlist - nearing 100 versions - and letting it wash over you. The sleigh riders eat pumpkin pie, then sing one more time about how great the sleigh ride was, remembering their awesome day.Īfter listening to 4.5 hours of my self-made “Sleigh Ride” Abyss, I feel comfortable choosing the ten best versions. But it’s a shame, because there are fun moments like chestnuts “pop-pop-pop”-ing that just beg for another bit of artistic license. A lot of versions stop there, preferring to edit out the further birthday party (and further variation on the orchestral theme) at Farmer Gray’s house. They ride and enjoy the snow, get cold and snuggle together, singing songs. And the lyrics are a short story, admittedly one low on conflict - friends arrive, call “yoo-hoo,” and everyone gets in the sleigh. “Sleigh Ride” is particularly full of hooks for artists to interpret as they please. Lots of Christmas music is like this - any standard is only as good as the person singing it, the liberties they took with your familiarity. SLEIGH RIDE FOREVER” has 94 versions of the song, and they are sonically diverse enough that you might put it on and forget it’s the same song over and over. I love it so deeply that at the time of writing, my Spotify playlist titled “JUST SLEIGH RIDE. Whenever it came on and filled the vaulted ceilings of the shoe store with horns, it put a sprightly spring in my step. I started setting it apart from other holiday classics when I worked in a shoe store in college. With three main versions - instrumental, full lyrics, partial lyrics - there are endless permutations, little moments throughout just asking for whoever’s taking on the reins to make their own. It also doesn’t reference the consumerism of the season in the least, instead taking a winter experience and encapsulating it perfectly in song. It’s a song that celebrates the moment, telling you to be present and enjoy what’s around you. “Sleigh Ride,” originally conceived by Leroy Anderson, doesn’t want to make you miss someone who isn’t there, or remind you of Christmases past. No, this is a song about a sleigh ride: of eating pumpkin pie with pals, of feeling warm despite the cold. And it’s not even a Christmas song - it’s a holiday song, a celebration of the winter season despite folks like the Carpenters and Sesame Street trying to change a lyric from “birthday” to “Christmas” and claim it for the all-consuming tinsel avalanche of Christmas ubiquity. “Sleigh Ride” is unequivocally the best Christmas song of all time. With the ability to set writing goals, tag sheets and post directly to sites, it has enabled me to focus more on my writing and use the iPad Pro with less friction. Ulysses focuses on a more stripped-back writing environment, based on Markdown XL, with a dark theme, unobtrusive user interface and grouped projects with ‘sheets’ that replace individual documents. My idea of documents has always been the traditional model of creating individual files, all of which are accessible from a shared file system like the Finder on macOS. In fact, I’m wrote this blog post with it. Moving on, Ulysses on iOS has changed the way that I think about writing. I’ve met a number of interesting people using on Icro on my iPad Pro, whom I wouldn’t have met elsewhere. Icro on the iPad Pro offers a simple interface for posting images and sharing quick thoughts, with what can only be regarded as a very engaged and genuine user base, who are generally over the foolishness and narcissism on Facebook. Whilst Twitter is my main link to new and the outside worl), Icro for Micro.blog has radically shifted the way that I think about microblogging and sharing updates online. It’s also great to have to the side in split view. Altogether, Twitterrfic turns Twitter into a pleasant online space for me and I use its Twitter list function heavily to follow news and blogs that I don’t want to see in my normal feed. The ability to customise the interface with themes, colours and icon shapes is also fantastic and the app respects the recommended two-column interface that works so well on iPads. I don’t see any of this when I use Twitterrific, as it offers powerful muting, muffling and most importantly, no ads. In recent years, Twitter has received more and more criticism for its handling of online abuse, fake news and bots. One of the apps that I use the most on my iPad Pro is Twitterrific. Instead, reflecting on my move to spending most of my time on the iPad Pro, I thought it would be better to highlight five of the more interesting third-party apps on iOS that have transformed the way that I think and go about computing. Not to mention, Shortcuts is really powerful, but I’ve got nothing on the famous Federico Viticci. I could talk about how useful the Affinity apps are (despite my seriously amateur artistic status) or how great it is to read with Books. I could go on forever about why I use certain apps and place them on the first home screen but we don’t have all day. Cradle Mountain and Dove Lake in Tasmania (shot with my Canon 500D).Three Other Visible (Suggested) Apps in the Dock My home screen is below, followed by a list of apps (with links to those from third parties). The apps that make up this space-particularly the dock-determine how you use the device. To frame my thoughts on using iPad Pro, I thought that it would be interesting to run through my first home screen. The Mac is still the hub for my heavier content, such as original iCloud Photo Library files and HD iTunes downloads, however, the iPad now serves as the device that I pick up first to edit photos, create documents, watch online video, complete emails and other creative tasks. I absolutely loved it and certainly appreciated its status as an ‘in-between’ device, as Jobs sold it: more capable than a smartphone but more portable than a laptop. My earliest experiences with iPad (aside from playing around with others’ models from 2010), was when I could afford the third-generation iPad in 2012. My mental model of computing is built around the Mac but in recent times, I’ve moved much of my everyday computing to my 10.5-inch iPad Pro. From classic Mac OS through to modern-day macOS, Cupertino’s take on the desktop interface has always worked for me. I’ve been a committed Mac user since I was five years old, with my family’s first Power Macintosh 6500 in 1997. Can you find the statues of Florence Nightingale Lord Sidney Herbert?
